Workshop on folk songs, dances held at Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya

GUWAHATI: A five-day-long workshop on Goalpariya Loka Geet and Loka Nritya (folk songs and dances of Assam) that was organized by the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) under the Union Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Department of Performing Arts, Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya (MSSV), concluded here recently.

Participants from the Department of Performing Arts participated under renowned exponents Guru Baby Bhuyan in Goalpariya Loka Geet with instrumental accompanists Uttam Roy on dotara, Amarendra Roy on sarinda and Sambhu Roy on Goalpariya dhol and Guru Drona Bhuyan in Loka Nritya with accompanists Dulal Bhuyan and Mridul Bhuyan.

The workshop started with an inaugural ceremony on December 3. The closing ceremony of the workshop was held at the MSSVcampus where Dr Dimple Saikia, HoD in-charge of the Department of Performing Arts, presided over the function. Dr Prashanna Gogoi, Director of NEZCC, Dr Jagadish Patgiri, Professor and Veswuzu Phesao, Deputy Director of NEZCC, graced the occasion as the guests of honour.

The valedictory function was marked by an interactive session amongst the participants who shared their experiences of being a part of the workshop. The expressed the wish that such workshops would be taken up in future as well which will help them academically. Guru Drona Bhuyan and Guru Baby Bhuyan also shared their experiences of the workshop, stated a press release.

The participants presented Lok Nritya and Loka Geet during the programme followed by a Guru Seva and felicitation of the experts by the participants. In the closing ceremony, Himangshu Sarma, research scholar of the Department, was also felicitated for having received the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puruskar from the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
