GUWAHATI: A one-day zonal-level workshop on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is organized for officers and officials of the North East Zone in Guwahati on Monday. Several senior officers from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Delhi, including Kal Singh, Director General; N K Santoshi, Addl. Director General; Jose Kurian, Director; and Rohit Naagar, Dy. Director, attended this workshop. Senior officers from Zonal Office, Guwahati, including K Manao Singh, Deputy Director General, and Jagat Hazarika, Director, and other participants from FOD (HQ), Zonal Office, Guwahati, and Regional Offices in Shillong, Gangtok, Agartala, Itanagar, Dibrugarh, Guwahati, Imphal, Kohima, and Aizawl also attended the workshop.

In his inaugural speech, DG Kal Singh highlighted the importance of CPI data in different policymaking processes of the government, the reserve bank, and research. N K Santoshi, ADG (PSD), MoSPI, highlighted that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is an important part of macroeconomics and plays a vital role in taking decisions about monetary policy in the economy. He further said that for getting good results from market surveys, understanding the principles and concepts is very important.

Jose Kurian, Director, PSD, MoSPI, New Delhi, spoke in detail about the concepts and definitions of the Consumer Price Index and conducted consumer price index surveys all over India to identify markets and products in 1,432 town markets and 1,471 rural markets.

Since its inception in 1950, the Field Operations Division (FOD) of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has conducted nationwide sample surveys on various aspects of Socio-Economic, Industrial, agricultural, and price statistics (like CPI and WPI), etc. NSSO (FOD), conducts surveys on different subjects in a time-bound manner, termed rounds, which cater for the data requirements of its stakeholders.
