World Environment Day Celebrated in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: In order to address the grave concern of environmental degradation and sensitize the common people regarding maintaining the balance of the ecosystem, World Environment Day was celebrated across the State by various organizations and bodies.

In the Assam Legislative Assembly, saplings of Nahor, Bokul, Arjun and Debodaru were planted by Deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly Dr Nomal Momim, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Chairman of Public Accounts Committee Wajed Ali Choudhury.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Momin stressed the prime agenda for the celebration of the event which is saving the environment and keeping the ecosystem intact. He also pointed out the environmental misbalance caused due to urbanization. "Forests and wetlands must be preserved to maintain a healthy ecosystem," he said.

Meanwhile, the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) conducted a statewide plantation drive to mark the occasion. AGP president and Minister Atul Bora appealed to all members of the party to plant trees in a view to make Assam free from pollution.

In Guwahati, the drive was carried out by AGP's sister organizations — Asom Yuba Parishad, Asom Mahila Parishad, and Asom Chatra Parishad. On the occasion of World Environment Day, the All Guwahati Students' Union (AGSU) with assistance from Madhya Guwahati Chatra Santha conducted a plantation drive at Tarini Choudhury Government Girls H.S. & M.P. School here.

AGSU president Anwar Hussain, in-charge general secretary Alakesh Nath along with various office bearers took part in the plantation drive. "Because of plants humans can survive," said Anwar Hussain. With an initiative to make Guwahati green the AGSU along with the public planted trees in different areas of the city. Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad and All Assam Law Students' Union conducted plantation drives in different areas of the city. The programme was inaugurated by State Revenue Minister Jogen Mohan.
