GUWAHATI: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) observed World Kidney Day with a series of events aimed at raising awareness about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), which is increasingly recognized as a silent killer. Physicians at GMCH reported a significant rise in CKD cases of unknown origin in certain regions of Assam, necessitating further research into the issue.

The prevalence of CKD in India has increased from 11.12% in 2011 to 16.38% in 2023, and Assam's rates are estimated at 12-15%. Manjuri Sharma, Head of the Nephrology Department at GMCH, explained this increase as a result of lifestyle disorders like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, and the increasing practice of alternative medicine and dependence on unqualified practitioners, which tends to cause delayed diagnosis.

To mark the day, GMCH had organized a walkathon with noted Assamese actress Jerifa Wahed to raise kidney health awareness. After the walk, an educational program was conducted, presided over by GMCH Principal Achyut Ch. Baishya and participated by different medical professionals.

Students of the Nephrology Department staged a drama highlighting the need for early consultation of doctors over unscientific procedures. GMCH, the biggest hospital in Assam, provides free dialysis through Ayushmann Bharat and has in the recent past achieved milestones in kidney transplant, including its first deceased donor transplant in December 2023 and a successful cadaveric transplant on March 1.
