’All–round Development’

On Republic Day, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi spoke of Assam’s all–round development quoting official statistics and percentage increases on different fronts. However, the people of Assam have seen the kind of development that is taking place only in respect of some blue–eyed boys of the ruling party who are able to virtually loot the exchequer with impunity. A figure that needs to be quoted as having contributed to the selective development of a privileged lot of blue–eyed boys adds up to Rs 2,178 crore released by some treasury officers during the last three years without any proper documents. Such irregular and unlawful releases of huge sums of public money have taken place mainly from the treasuries of Dispur (Guwahati–6), Jorhat, Sivasagar, Cachar and Goalpara. Such irregular and unlawful practices were inevitable in a set–up where not a single officer connected with corrupt practices has been punished in the 14 years of the Tarun Gogoi government. Not to speak of bureaucrats alone, there have been allegations of large–scale corruption even by ministers of his Cabinet—something that is also evident from the phenomel increases of their persol assets. To call this “development” in a State that has been deprived of industrial development and avenues of employment for over three decades is an instance of heartless and cruel irony for common people.
