An Autocratic Gesture

It is not as though Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi can pretend to be uware of the reason for updating the tiol Register of Citizens of 1951 only in Assam to the exclusion of other States of India. In fact, it is because he was well aware of what the updating exercise of the NRC would do to the electoral roll of 2014 that he has been so averse to the updating of the NRC. He has been dodging this exercise time and again until the Supreme Court was compelled to intervene and lay down strict deadlines and modalities for the entire exercise. The exercise of updating the NRC has begun and would have proceeded at a satisfactory pace, had it not been for the sabotage of the exercise by a few senior bureaucrats at his bidding. Up to a point, it was difficult for him to show his own hand in the business of sabotaging the proceedings because he had already appealed to the people over television channels to fully cooperate with the updating process. However, alarmed at the success of the updating process despite efforts to sabotage it, he showed his hand on Tuesday when he said that he would approach the Centre to include the mes in the electoral roll of 2014 in the updated NRC. The very hint is sabotage of the NRC update process and an autocratic  contempt of the  Supreme Court.
