Language is a medium through which we can communicate with other or we can exchange our views or ideas. When people started living together, they used language as a tool for communication and later on it was recognized by society.

Assamese or Asomiya is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken basically in the state of Assam where it is an official language. It is happy to note that 14 million people speak Assamese and it serves as a lingua franca in the region.

Now, being an Assamese and true devotee of the Assamese language, I strongly support the decision of the Government of Assam to make Assamese a mandatory subject in all schools, including private and government ones in Assam till Class X. It will help the new generation students who are studying in English medium schools in the Brahmaputra Valley to learn the language more firmly. Being a parent, some fear is developing in our mind— whether our children will continue to study Assamese as a subject up to Class X or not. This is because most of the children studying in English medium schools where they are studying either Hindi or Sanskrit as an optional subject. Even some parents and children give less importance on the Assamese language as a subject. And as a result, the number of Assamese speaking and learning students are gradually declining. Through your popular esteemed daily, I am appealing to all parents to encourage your children to study Assamese and you have to provide more and more Assamese books and magazines to children and encourage them to study.
