Bridge to connect Majuli

The Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone of a bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Majuli to Jorhat in February 2016 , just before the Assam Assembly Election. The DPR for the bridge was to be completed by October 2016.

The people of the island have been demanding for a bridge connecting Jorhat for a long time.

The people of the island were overjoyed when the foundation stone was laid. People of the island spontaneously voted for the BJP candidate Sarbananda Sonowal who became the Chief Minister of the State. As the time passed and people could see no progress for the construction of the bridge. They lost all faith that their dream bridge will ever be constructed. However, during the Chief Minister's visit to Majuli on Thursday, July 30 in a meeting with journalists the question of the said bridge was raised. The Chief Minister said that the bridge will be constructed and the DPR for the same is expected by October 2020 that is after four years of the earlier statement prior to the Assembly election. People are thinking about the seriousness of the government for the project or it is once again an election promise which seldom materialise as the Assembly election is nearing.
