Dark lanes pose threat

Dark lanes of the city are becoming a ‘safe haven’ for miscreants to carry out crimil activities, particularly at night. Thus, paucity of street lights in almost all residential areas across the city is a mece for its citizens.

Crimil activities have increased manifold due to absence of proper street lighting. On July 30, one of our family members was attacked by a group of street muggers on a dark alley at rikalbari area; he was badly beaten up and left bruised on the street.

This letter is not to bring the culprits to book.  There will be thugs and thieves in every city. The pertinent point that arises is had the lane been lit with sufficient streetlights, such a ghastly incident would not have occurred.

Beyond the shadow of a doubt, many such incidents occur or are reported every night in the dark lanes of the city. Crimes can better be prevented than solved. Street lighting is a basic facility that every citizen is entitled to by the administration. It will also avert crimil activities to a large extent.

We hope that the administration takes steps of installing sufficient street lights to thwart such gruesome incidents.
