Dilution of NRC

As days roll by since the publication of the details of NRC, the entire process, the pain of compiling such a huge document with a big manpower at a cost of a huge expenditure (Rs. 1,600 crore) keeps on getting diluted. The dilution of such an important document said to be the ‘life-line’ of the indigenous people of Assam is not at all a good sign for the entire nation. The dilution of NRC sets the historical ‘Assam Accord’ at naught. It is palpable that the political party enjoying power at the Centre with a clear majority of MPs always turns things to their advantage. We could see how Mamta Banerjee has been crying foul over the compilation of NRC vehemently protesting against NRC passing provocative comments. Ex. Chief-minister Tarun Gogoi also termed NRC as a mere waste paper. What is more, knowing it fully well that the process of compilation of NRC was under surveillance of the apex court the state BJP criticized the compilation process alleging that a good number of names of the foreign nationals have entered in NRC. We are afraid that the decision of the Central government to introduce the ‘Citizens Amendment Bill’ (CAB) Bill in Parliament and after enactment, the Act may prove to be like the last nail on the camel’s back. We may sum up that all these adverse factors responsible for diluting of NRC are hanging like the sword of Democles threatening the very existence of the indigenous people of Assam.

That apart, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured his counterpart of Bangladesh during her last visit to India that Bangladesh need not have to fear about the outcome of NRC and that none would be pushed back to that country.
