Advances in satellite imaging, mapping and rainfall estimations have made it possible for the Hydrologic Research Center, a nonprofit research corporation, to implement an EWS for the whole of Central America, where 128 landslides had occurred between 2004 and 2013, killing 2,730 people. The system was validated in October 2015 when heavy rains triggered a landslide in Guatemala, killing at least 280 people and burying parts of a village. (IANS)
