Plight of Santipur

Santipur in Guwahati is a sizable area comprising both plain and hilly areas. However, the pathetic plight of the area makes one wonder if it is under the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and the Public Work Department. Just at the threshold of Santipur from the Santipur City Bus Stop is a Railway crossing which often remains closed, creating huge traffic jam even to the extent of blocking the connecting tiol Highway med after Late Dinesh Goswami. A couple of years ago, on both sides of the road after the Railway crossing, foot paths were constructed making the rrow road even rrower. Adding insult to the injury, there are pot holes all over the road leading to Santipur.

A couple of years back, the connecting Santipur main road was constructed with blocks; but because of poor and unscientific construction, the blocks got removed creating pot holes at various places. Drain water from the adjacent Pragjyotish College often submerge the road, creating havoc. A little ahead, just at the end of college wall, dirty water falls on the road from the adjacent building med Jamsed Building. In such a situation, the plight of the passes-by can very well be imagined.

Although much has been talked about cleansing of the road side drains, but the drain at Santipur main road has never been cleared for years together.

In an endeavour to draw the attention of the GMC and PWD with high hopes, through your esteemed daily, I would like to call upon the said authorities to take urgent measures before the rainy season begins, by way of providing relief to the inhabitants of Santipur in respect of the sorry plight that they are being forced to bear..

Crime against women

 It has been observed that of late, crime against women is on the rise in Assam. There is much discussion in different fora, including the electronic media and the print media, while protest rallies are bein staged in the State against such crime. Setting up of emergency  call numbers for rape victims is just a knee jerk reaction. It is the justice delivery system that’s failing. It is commendable that Assam Chief Minister and the Gauhati High Court have taken steps for formation of fast track court to deal with the perpetrators of this crime , as well as for framing foolproof charge sheet immediately by the investigating agency and the police without any laxity and loopholes for the culprits to be enlarged on bail. But, the most heinous and brutal crime of rape and killing of minor girls should be treated as rarest of the rare crimes and the culprits should be given capital punishment. Necessary legislation may be framed by the law makers for severe punishment for such crimes against women. The citizens of the country, irrespective of cast, creed and religion and politicians of different parties, lawyers, judges,intellectuals and the media should come forward to raise voice against rape and killing of minor girls and for framing of legislations that provide for stringent punishment to the perpetrators of crime against the fairer sex. Further, with teegers taking to such crimes, the juvenile law  should be freshly framed to cope with the emerging and unpleasant situation.
