Role of Bollywood Stars
In fact since time immemorial, our film industry, referred to as Bollywood, has produced innumerable patriotic movies where silver screen heroes are projected as patriotic heroes. The common people like me worship those reel heroes as true patriots. But in reality it is observed time and again that reel heroes are not exactly heroes in real life. Instances galore where the so-called superstars of the film world were caught doing anti-national activities.
Memory is still fresh with Sanjay Dutt's role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts. Many actors and actresses, along with few reputed singers and film directors, were caught in camera gracing private parties of notorious don Dawood Ibrahim in foreign lands. Now again Salman Khan is making news as he is proved guilty and sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment in a blackbuck poaching case by a Jodhpur court. It appears all is not well with our Bollywood industry. Of course there are people like Nana Patekar who have proved themselves to be real heroes on and off the screen.
Dr Ashim Chowdhury,
Stop the Trend
In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the number of crimes against women in Assam. These crimes range from domestic violence to dowry deaths to rape and murder cases, the latter being the most heinous one even as all crimes have the same basis — the demon in human being.
What is unfortunate is that Assam has traditionally been a women-centric society. Here women have always been held in respect. They in general have never been treated in a way as it does in patriarchal societies. But now the trend has been reversed. This must be checked before an explosion of crime against women blows our society into pieces.
The prime responsibility rests with the police. It has to be empowered in all possible ways so that they have all the intelligence and resources at their disposal to deal with women-related crimes. Another way is to have only-women police teams so that they are sensitive about the issue of crime against women and act on time to avert untoward incidents.
