Unlocking higher education

The UGC has granted the green signal for reopening of universities and colleges through its latest guidelines issued on November 5. As circular, the guidelines may be adopted by the institutions as per the local conditions and directives of the government authorities. The universities and colleges outside the containment zones may be opened in a graded manner after consultations with State/UT governments concerned and subject to the fulfilment of the guidelines/SOP for safety and health protocol prepared by UGC. The institutions should ensure that not more than 50 per cent of the total students will be present at any point in time and necessary guidelines/protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are in place. Universities and colleges must follow social distancing, use of face masks, and other protective measures also with administrative offices, research laboratories, and libraries. This is a good move to sustained higher education in the post-pandemic period.

Arnab Goswami arrest

Arnab Goswami, the owner and editor in chief of Republic TV, gets arrested in a joint operation by the Raigad police and the Mumbai police. Now, the question that arises first is about the due process of law and political partnership than the instinctive defence of freedom of expression, democracy or freedom of the press. The deep political divide over his arrest is a sad commentary on contemporary Indian journalism.

Congratulations Kamala Harris

It is indeed a pleasure to see Kamala Harris as the first Black lady to hold the post of the coveted Vice President post of U.S. The way she speaks and the confidence that she carries with her makes me feel proud as a fellow woman. There is never a dull moment. I hope she can fulfil the aspirations of thousands of her fellow citizens who voted for her and open the way for many women. Wishing Mr. President Biden and VP Kamala Harris all the best in their future endeavours.

P.P. Barua,

Guwahati.
