Menace of theft & burglary: Letters to THE EDITOR

Of late, thefts and burglaries at Teok have seen a spike raising serious concern among its residents. In just a few weeks, several such cases have been reported in the locality, including the shocking daylight burglary at this writer's house a few days back. The burglars made away with a number of items of gold jewellery. A few shop break-ins are also reported to have taken place. Now, the residents of Teok are living in a constant state of fear.

Presumably, the burglars carry out a recce of the houses and shops and then commit the break-ins when the time is deemed best. I feel that a well-thought strategy must be evolved to check such cases. Besides, there's a need to come up with a 'coordinated plan' wherein both the public and the police work together. Also, people need to be more alert, vigilant, proactive and sensitized to privacy. Any suspicious movement of any person should be reported to the police at once. It is expected that the police constantly track the history-sheeters and the bad characters of the area on a regular basis. I fervently hope that the police will make elaborate plans to nab these burglars and ensure the security of the residents by acting as a special force to curb recurrence of thefts and burglaries in the locality.

Dipen Gogoi,

Teok, Jorhat.
