Letters to The Editor

There is often a joke in the social media that Rahul Gandhi is the star campaigner of the BJP. In some aspects it’s true because wherever this Gandhi goes it benefits the BJP. The reason is he often makes some mistakes in his speech and as a result public doesn’t take him seriously.

'Conscience keepers'

The letter dated 24th February written by Kajal Chatterjee under the above caption has drawn my attention. The way she tried to glorify Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in her letter is commendable. We, the commoners have a lot of questions for the Congress leadership but our questions fall on the deaf ears of some people.

My question is: why is the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress having an alliance with the Leftists in West Bengal even though it is fighting bitterly against the Leftists in Kerala? Rahul Gandhi was heard criticizing the Left government in one of his rallies in Kerela. Under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi the once mighty Congress was decimated twice in 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but still now the Gandhi dynasty refuses to allow other much more capable people to lead the party. Coming to Assam, the Congress under Lt. Tarun Gogoi ruled Assam for 15 consecutive years, but today the same Congress has got into the lap of 'communal' AIUDF to fight elections.

I would be happy if 'super loyalist' of the Gandhis, Kajal Chatterjee responds to my letter. I would be glad if the response from her is a long one.

Simply peerless

I was going through the lengthiest letter ever in this column of your esteemed daily on 24/02/2021 written by Kajal Chatterjee under the caption 'Conscience keepers'. In her letter of defense of our uncrowned prince Rahul Gandhi who did tear an ordinance in front of his mother's nominated Prime Minister terming his act as 'for sake of the nation'. His latest selfless effort to divide north and south India after being evicted from the Amethi (Gandhi bastion) is another example of his 'commitment' towards the nation. There are many examples of Rahul Gandhi's antics inside and outside the Parliament and those antics might have prompted Mrs. Chatterjee to pen a few line from the immortal song of our dearest Bhupen Da. So long fearless and peerless writers are alive and kicking we the proud Indians expect Rahul Gandhi and company to prosper, bloom and lead the nation. Mrs. Chatterjee being a secular Indian is at the liberty to worship a family for the surname's contribution to the nation but we the Asomiyas know who the real Gandhis are.

New and clean

Democracy requires strong Opposition. In the 2016 Assembly elections, the Congress was routed due to corruption at all levels. Now again elections are knocking at the door. There was a mad rush of the prospective candidates of the Congress in Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati recently. Hopefully the Congress has understood the past mistakes and this time it would project clean and new faces. The irony of the situation is that all the decisions of the Congress are taken by incompetent Rahul Gandhi. There is often a joke in the social media that Rahul Gandhi is the star campaigner of the BJP. In some aspects it's true because wherever this Gandhi goes it benefits the BJP. The reason is he often makes some mistakes in his speech and as a result public doesn't take him seriously. He is treated as an entertainer more than senior leader of a national party.

Coming to the forthcoming elections, things look very tough for the Congress and this time they shouldn't repeat the same mistake of allotting party tickets to the same set of leaders whom people have rejected in 2016. There are some bright people with integrity and calibre in the party but the final selection is done by immature Rahul Gandhi in consultation with another 'flop star' Ripun Bora. Only God knows when the oldest party will clear up the top brass with competent ones.

The story of Black Holes

Former Head of Theoretical Astrophysics Section, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Dr. Abhas Mitra has recently written an excellent book titled, 'The Rise and Fall of the Black Hole Paradigm'. Former Principal of Cotton College (now University) Dr. K. D. Krori and one of the top relativity scientists of India, has made the following comment on the book, "This book presents an exceptionally bold and fairly exhaustive study on the subject. I am confident that this publication would gain worldwide appreciation."

Justice for Krishna Baishya

Krishna Baishya was an employee of a micro finance group who hailed from Hajo and was posted in Nagaon district. On 10th February, Krishna Baishya was kidnapped by some miscreants from Nagaon and the miscreants demanded ransom for his release. On 16th February the miscreants killed him after barbaric torture and his body was found inside a jungle around Nagaon. A few pertinent questions are: who are the kidnappers and killers of Krishna Baishya? Strangely, kidnapping and murder of Krishna Baishya is kept in dark. No hue and cry happened in print and electronic media. Now it has come to light that killers of Krishna Baishya are people suspected nationalities who have infiltrated into Assam illegally. We all know Nagaon is one of the most affected districts of demographic change.

Krishna Baishya was murdered but till now not a single political leader, either of the BJP or of the Congress or the so-called Jatiyotabadi Sangathans found time to visit his place. Krishna Baishya leaves behind his ailing parents and he was the sole bread earner of his family..It was expected that the BJP which claims itself to be a protector and saviour of the indigenous people has turned a blind eye. Krishna Baishya's murder is the second instance from Hajo. Miya appeasement policy has ruined Assam as Miyas have become a threat to survival of the indigenous people in their own State.

Political AASU

Very often it is seen in the social media and some prominent BJP leaders accuse the AASU of being political. For people like me who is a former member of the AASU during academic days in Darrang College initially always objected to such accusations. For us the AASU was always non-political, but going by their activities of the last 3-4 years, the political character of the students' union is very much glaring. The statements of President Dipanko Nath and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah are all political in nature. Never ever the AASU cadres got directly involved in the electoral politics but Dipanko Nath and Sankor Jyoti Baruah are speaking like spokespersons of the AJP. The newly-elected general secretary said loudly that in the ensuing election the AASU will directly support the AJP. Even after the AGP was formed post Assam Agitation and in subsequent elections the AASU maintained its non-political character. Many people left the AASU and joined one or the other political party but while that person was in the AASU, he/she maintained its apolitical character. There is still time for Dipanko Nath and Sankor Jyoti Baruah to resign from the AASU and join their favourite party and contest elections. The AASU is our pride which has stood behind the indigenous people in any difficult circumstances but now due to some over-aged people (who shamelessly call themselves student leaders) the reputation of the AASU is maligned. It hurts us when somebody calls the AASU as 'sanda party' but the truth is that some selfish super senior leaders have turned 'sanda collection' as their business.

COVID cases

In some States, COVID-19 cases have again increased viz UP, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. In Guwahati, cases have been detected in some schools. As such we should be very alert to take precautions. I would like to request the government and the Health & Family Welfare department to take necessary measures on this issue without delay.

Double-digit growth

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its revised forecast for global economic growth in 2021, has projected Indian economy to grow by 11.5 per cent, making it the only major economy expected to register a double-digit growth amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. India is followed by China, Spain and France, which are expected to grow by 8.1 per cent, 5.9 per cent, and 5.5 per cent respectively. According to the IMF, the global economy is projected to grow by 5.5 per cent in 2021 and 4.2 per cent in 2022. It is heartening for India.
