Welcome move

The Prime Minister's addressed to the nation on Tuesday evening (20-04-2021) is a welcome move that has dissipated the doubts of people. There is an apprehension in the minds of the people regarding national lockdown and many fake and false propaganda is getting circulated on social media. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given an assurance that nationwide lockdown is the last resort. His appeal to the public to follow all COVID protocols is certainly going to inspire the countrymen to fight the pandemic. His address was much needed in this hour of crisis. Already migrant workers apprehending lockdown are leaving for their homeland and that assurance from the PM would clear any doubts on their mind. Let's unite as a nation to fight the pandemic.

Rise in road accidents

Road accidents have seen a sharp rise in many parts of the state. Most of these accidents are due to collision between vehicles where trucks are involved. It is not right to generalize but most of these heavy vehicle drivers drive very rashly. Also, there are other reasons like careless driving without using seat belts and helmets. People on two-wheelers do not comply with the use of a strong helmet. Though traffic rules were very strictly enforced a few months back, yet it seems to have not been on track now. It is the responsibility of the citizens as well to follow rules and avoid accidents. Speed breakers at required places should be placed properly and unnecessary speed breakers must be removed. Proper road signs should also be erected in accident-prone areas. Specifically at sharp turns, multiple diversion areas and hilly areas, more caution should be taken.

Constitutional compulsion

The Constitution of the nation is for the welfare of the country. Elections are one of the few compulsions of the Constitution and accordingly, Legislative Assembly polls were conducted in Assam when it was due. Before the announcement of the dates for the polls, the COVID-19 situation in the state was normal as per the inputs provided by Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. One cannot blame any political party for taking out rallies, holding meetings, etc., because these are all part and parcel of the election canvassing process. It is also true that immediately after the elections there is a sudden upsurge in corona cases in the state forcing the caretaker government to take some drastic measures which have ultimately hit the common people hard on the belly. Recently, in a reply to the query of a reporter, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma indirectly indicated that the situation in the state is not encouraging.

It simply proves that sometimes constitutional and political compulsions backfire leading the middle-class people and the strata below them to face the music.

Reasonable verdict

A United States jury on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, convicted former Minneapolis Police officer Darek Chauvin for murdering George Floyd, an African-American man in Minnesota, the USA while he was in police custody. Chauvin was found guilty of all three counts he had faced — second-and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The verdict is a rare rebuke of police misconduct in the USA. Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo, who testified against Chauvin and fired him and the three other officers involved in Floyd's arrest, thanked the jurors for their courageous verdict. Further, US President Joe Biden has hailed the verdict that made Minneapolis Police officer Darek Chauvin guilty of murdering Floyd.

The death of Floyd in Police custody was protested in and outside the USA. Soon after the custodial death of Floyd on May 25, 2020, Amnesty International urged the US Attorney General to punish the police officer, Chauvin for murdering Floyd. Chauvin's guilty verdict has made news around the world. Including George Floyd's family, the Black people in the USA have expressed relief with the decision that made Minneapolis Police officer Darek Chauvin guilty of murdering Floyd. It is to be mentioned that the number of deaths of Black people at the hands of White police officers in the USA is high, and the Black people in the USA have been demanding the government to give justice to them.
