Lockdown is the only way now

It is shame that so many deaths have taken place due to the lack of oxygen and medicines. But, still, all politicians are playing their dirty politics. Lockdown is the only way to check the spread of the virus, but at present, it is very difficult for us. Night lockdowns do not serve any purpose to control the spread as there are not that many people on roads at that time.

Akhil Gogoi

Nelson Mandela rightly said, "it always seems impossible until it's done". One of its examples is the win of Akhil Gogoi in the Assam Assembly election, 2021. This win reminds us of the kind of Bollywood movie drama like 'Raees' casting Shahrukh khan, who contested the election from the jail and won. But Gogoi's triumph brings reel to real life. Many people compare him with Bishnu Prasad Rabha, an Assamese icon who was arrested under the Preventive Detention Act in the special cells of Berhampur Jail in 1962 for six months. Rabha contested the election as an independent candidate from Tezpur and won. Bishnu Prasad Rabha had a chance to campaign, but in Akhil Gogoi's case, the scenario was a little different as he could not come out of the jail to campaign for the election as it was difficult for him to get bail. The name of Akhil Gogoi is not scintillating in Sivsagar only but in all over India. The youth of Assam consider him as their comrade as this sort of victory is rarely seen.

Stark resemblance

After going through the voting pattern of the recently held Assam Assembly polls, I, a senior citizen of India, have started observing stark resemblances between the Kashmiri pundits and the Axomiya community who are the true sons of the soil. The plight of Kashmiri pundits is known to all as they are leading a refugee life in their own country after being systematically ousted from the homeland by infiltrators across the western border. After the massive demographic change that took place in Assam courtesy of the Congress rule along with the support from the Leftists, some pseudo-secular intellectuals is today threatening the very existence of the indigenous people of the State. Indigenous people's votes in constituencies in Barpeta, Dhubri, Goalpara, etc have become a non-factor or at best valueless. A section of so-called intellectuals is out to make the AIUDF president the next Chief Minister of the State.

Wonderful job!

A photograph (page 6) in your esteemed daily on May 5, 2021, has made my day. The photo which depicts a young bridegroom donating blood during his marriage ceremony, that too, in his customary groom attire is certainly a front-page photograph. Your reporter deserves kudos for highlighting the noble gesture of a common man. The bridegroom who hails from Majuli is worthy of thousands of praises. May God bless the young couple.

Punishment 'precedes trial and conviction'

Akhil Gogoi has been languishing in jail for more than a year. When he would be released on bail is uncertain. Though all know that Akhil Gogoi is neither a Naxalite nor a hardened criminal, he has been in jail for a long time. This is simply because the government believes him to be an 'extraordinary criminal'. Even the Gauhati High Court also denies him bail. It allows his detention for an indefinite period. Isn't it punishing a person based on alleged crime a travesty of justice?

Issues before new Government

With the victory of the BJP-led alliance in the recently-held Assam Assembly election in Assam, two elected members of the alliance – Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sarbanand Sonowal – are in the queue for the post of Chief Minister. The high command of the BJP will decide their fates. Whoever the Chief Minister of Assam is, the general people in the State want that the BJP-led government in the State should work sincerely to develop the State. Assam is a poor and problematic State. To develop Assam economically, the decades' old problems of the State like floods, erosion etc., have to be solved. The State is said to be staggering under 20 lakh of unemployed youths at present. The new government in the State will have to take steps to create employment opportunities. The government should take measures to set up agro-based and mineral-based industries in the State. It is also important to revive the closed industries in the State. With the revival of the closed industries in the State, at least their employees will receive their stalled salaries. Nothing but industrialization can create employment in a State. The quality of infrastructure in Assam is not up to the mark. While economic infrastructure accelerates the process of growth, social infrastructure accelerates the process of human development. Infrastructure is made up of interrelated sectors such as railways, roads, ships, airways, communication, energy, health, education, science, technology and banking. Without quality infrastructure, no state can progress economically.

For decades, the indigenous people in Assam have been demanding the government to deport the foreigners that entered the State after March 24, 1971. The indigenous people of Assam want that the State government to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The indigenous people in Assam feel that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act will facilitate several lakhs of Bangladeshi Hindus to settle in the State. Their settlement will be a big burden on the State. The new government in Assam has a big responsibility to shoulder.

Rangia.
