'Samadhikshetra' of former AXX chief

'Samadhikshetra' of former 'Axam Xahitya Xabha' president Sahityacharya Jatindranath Goswami, an Assamese writer, editor and biographer, stands at Teok Nepali Xatra Path, Jorhat. The photo clearly shows that the local MLA and the conscious residents of the locality are little concerned about proper preservation and maintenance of the same. As such, through a little space of this esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the Teok MLA as well as the Jorhat Branch Committee of the AXX to this negligent act.

APSC scam

Through this column of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the authorities concerned and the government about the growing cases in APSC (Assam Public Service Commission) examinations.

Since the APSC exam is one of the highly competitive exams in Assam, one must take this as diligently as possible. There have been numerous incidents of candidates caught while cheating and some candidates were arrested in connection with cases in the cash-for-job scam in the APSC. If this type of illegal activity is not stopped, there is no meaning in conducting this exam. The government should look into the matter and take the necessary steps.

Kudos to Japan

Apropos the thought-provoking news report, "Discarded mobile phones to medals, Japan shows the way" (published on 26 July 2021, Monday), I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude towards the Government of Japan for initiating the inspiring move on the idea of making Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for the Tokyo Olympics, beginning on July 23.

Indeed, it is a great concept of recycling and reusing the e-waste (i.e., discarded mobile phones) in the form of 'The glittering Olympic medals' for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Now, isn't it the right time for the government of all other countries of the world to be very responsible and start thinking over the Japan model and sensitize the masses regarding the impending danger of the uncontrollable heaps of e-wastes spreading speedily around the world due to human negligence and unawareness?

We must act upon the urgent need of collecting, recycling and reusing the discarded electronic devices for the greater human welfare of this beautiful world without fail, otherwise, the world would be callously degraded, polluted and bound to be forcefully changed into a vast junkyard, which is not at all desired for a healthy human livelihood.

Through your esteemed news daily, I would like to applaud the Government of Japan for igniting the passion of developing the right concept of waste management among the responsible citizens of the country to solve the serious problem of uncontrollable heaps of e-waste here and there.

Such news items, undoubtedly, spread the great message of positive human development and its consequent outcome of social responsibility and individual contribution towards humanity.

All about Manipur

Manipur is a state of NE India bordering Myanmar which is famous for the following reasons. They are as follows.

1) It is one of the most insurgent-affected States of India where many insurgent groups are very active making life very insecure for common law-abiding people. The State is also the transit point of drug smuggling.

2) The State has the dubious distinction of high HIV positive cases.

3) It is one of the States in India which has produced many national and international-level athletes, including MG Mary Kom, Mirabai Chanu, Dingko Singh, Kunjarani Devi, Devendro Singh, Sarita Devi, Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu, Tingonleima Chanu, Likmabam Sushila Devi, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, S. Nilakanta and many more over the years. In the Tokyo Olympics, they have five representatives in sports like Boxing, Hockey, Judo, and Weightlifting. Already S. Mirabai Chanu has created history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to clinch the silver medal in the Olympics and the nation is still waiting for Magnificent Mary to add to the medals' tally.

4) It is one of the most politically unstable States in the country where floor crossing is a regular practice among their lawmakers, thus making the political scene very murky and uncertain.

5) It is the State whose princess Chitrangada got married to Arjun during the Mahabharat days.

Despite so many hardships, the tiny State is a powerhouse of sports in the country. Truly the State doesn't lack in potential champions and with better infrastructures, the State can contribute immensely in coming multinational games like Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and 2024 Paris Olympics.

Third wave

It will not be wrong to assume that corona is here to stay. With new strains emerging every 3-4 months, the virus has proved that it is not going to slow down anytime soon. Recently, AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria stated that the third wave of the virus is going to hit India between mid-September and early October and that it will especially affect the kids. I want to urge these authorities to please refrain from making such statements. The public is already under strenuous physical and mental stress and these types of statements only aggravate the suffering. If we maintain all the precautionary measures of maintaining social distance, washing our hands after coming in contact with a surface, wearing proper masks, not the surgical ones, we can stay away from this virus.

Discarded metals as medals

I was delighted and astonished when I came to know that for the Tokyo Olympics the Japanese government had to launch a two-year nationwide campaign to collect recycled materials such as abandoned electronic items for the production of the medals.

Even though trying to save the environment with such avant-garde ideas isn't new, how many people eventually follow them?

People should appreciate this initiative and the man behind this, Junichi Kawanishi, and try to follow this idea too.

The responsible authorities in any sports tournament should use discarded laptops, mobiles, computers, and so on to prepare the medals for the champions. Not only that, even schools and colleges, both private and government should avail of this idea and even make students involved in it. A small initiative can change things beautifully.

Mirabai strikes

We all know that behind every successful athlete there is a dedicated coach and a team. Behind the success of Mirabai Chanu no doubt there is a great coach. Coaches are still training athletes only because of their passion for sport, despite financial limitations. The PM should congratulate coaches in Mann Ki Baat.
