Scam Haunted UPA

People of the country are well aware about the scams of huge magnitude that rocked the boat of the country quite severely during the regime of the UPA. It now appears asif the ghost of the scams is still haunting the UPA long after it was shown the door by the NDA if report published in a section of the press is anything to go by. The report suggests that Juseppe Orsi, the former Chief of the Fin Meccanika company was Convicted by a court of Italy’s Milan and was jailed for four and a half – years for the scam involved in the sale of 12 V.V.I.P Helicopter to India. Bruno Spegnolini, the former Chief Executive officer of the Augusta west land, a sisiter concern of the Fin Meccanika company too was jailed for 6 years for the same scam involved in the sale of the Helicopters to India. Incidentally, though the Indian media were abuzz with the scam involved in the purchase of Helicopter at that point of time when the scam got unveiled, it got ebbed away with the passage of time.

Flyover collapse

The recent shocking incident of collapse of a flyover in north Kolkatta was quite unfortute. The mishap toll death touched 26 people. It injured many more. The tragic incident was one of the biggest to have hit the metropolitan city Kolkatta in recent times. In 2013, a large portion of a flyover at Ultadanga of Kolkatta had collapsed. These two incidents indicate the loopholes regarding safety of people. The flyover was under construction and vhicles should not have been allowed to ply below it.

Post-disaster rescue mechanism also lacked in the metropolitan city. The rescue operations could not have been carried out without assistance from the Indian army and the Metro authorities.

The incident can be kept aside referring it as an calamity as the compromise in the quality of the construction. The use of substandard material, faulty design, lack of close supervision - all these factors taken together must have resulted in the collapse.Strict measures should be implemented so that such tragedies coupd be averted near future.
