Onion prices are hitting all time highs, forcing households to significantly cut down their daily intake of the kitchen staple. Retailers are selling onion at Rs 100-120 per kg. Not just onions, prices of other essential goods too are skyrocketing in Assam along with other parts of the country. Common people are groaning at the burden, particularly the elderly. It is likely this situation will continue for another month. Ministers of concerned departments are merely trotting out figures to claim that onion has been dear during the tenure of previous governments of other parties. But instead of playing the blame game with political intent, these ministers should take appropriate, practical measures to bring prices under control. The authorities should look into the matter seriously so that common people get some relief from high prices of onion and other essential goods as well as medications.
