Stop summary justice

Stop summary justice

We have read in newspapers and seen in television that during the nationwide lockdown fairly large number of people who violate the lockout are intercepted and apprehended by the police in different parts of the State. It further appears from the reports that the police mercilessly beat up those people in public places. We have seen on March 30, 2020 in a popular news channel of Assam that even ladies were not spared and two male policemen had beaten up two bicycle-borne women. It is quite disgusting and it amounts to mockery of the concept of ‘Rule of Law’. We firmly believe that those who wilfully violate the prohibitory order should be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law, and at the same time, the practice adopted by the Assam Police delivering instant justice should also be deprecated.

We find it difficult why the human rights activists, organizations keep mum in this regard. It is high time we raised our voice against such violation of human rights by the Assam Police, or else tomorrow they will not even hesitate to beat up innocent people on the street on the slightest pretext.
