The Nirbhaya Case

The Nirbhaya Case

From December 16,2012 to January 22, 2022 though it took a long period of time to give justice to the victim and her family of Nirbhaya Case, indeed it is a good step by Delhi Court ordering to hang up the four convicts – Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Singh and Pawan Gupta. There were six members accused of gang-raping the victim. One of the accused was a minor and another accused, Ram Singh, died on March 11, 2013 in Tihar Jail. Rape is the fastest rising violent crime. It happens on streets, in cars, in schools, in parks, and in alleys. The rapist has no regard for age, race, or social status. Rape is not a selective crime. It was thought that after all the protests and coverage of nationally and internationally of the Nirbhaya case, crime against woman would come down. But it never did. Using a small sample survey, Human Rights Watch projects more than 7,200 minors are raped each year in India. Among these, victims who do report the assaults are alleged to suffer mistreatment and humiliation from the police.Shakti Mills gang rape case in August 2013, 71-year-old nun gang-raped in Ranaghat, West Bengal On 14 March, 2015, Unnao rape case 2017 etc are very deplorable. The world has entered into a new millennium, but from the dawn of civilization till date, the woman of the patriarchal society of India continues to be oppressed and ill-treated. She is dependent, weak, exploited and faces gender discrimination in every sphere of life. The gender-based violence that threatens the wellbeing, dignity and rights of women, extends across social, cultural, economic and regional boundaries. Rape is a non-bailable offense in the Indian penal code, But people do get bail because of a lack of evidence [in many cases]. The accused are often sheltered by police, or politicians, or even lawyers. But for the first time in India the convicts are going to be hanged on though it takes so many long years to take this step, but now just like this, some more serious steps must be taken for the safety of woman in India so that the convicts at least learn to fear the law of Constitution of India. Most importantly, the woman can roam freely without any fear of crime against them.
