Once, a yogi and his disciple arrived at a bustling city. They were hungry and needed a place to rest after their long travel, but were penniless. “We will have to beg for food and sleep in the public garden,” thought the disciple wearily.

Aloud he said: “There is a park over there. Shall we sit nearby and seek alms from passers-by?”

“Do you believe we’ll sleep under the open skies tonight?”, asked his master smilingly.

“I don’t see what else we can do.”

“Tonight we are going to sleep in an inn, that too after a hearty meal”.

“We cannot afford that!,” the disciple exclaimed.

“Come and sit here”, said the yogi.

Mystified, the disciple sat down with his master. The yogi said: “When you focus your mind intently on anything, it comes to pass.”

The yogi then began to meditate with utmost concentration. After some time, he suddenly got up and started walking. The disciple followed him, wondering how his master could find his way so rapidly through the unfamiliar streets and alleys. Before long, they were standing outside an inn.

They had just set foot at the entrance, when a man approached them. “I am the mager of this inn. You look like traveling holy men, but I believe you have no money. Would you like to work in the kitchen, and in return I’ll give you food and lodging here?”

“That is fine with us,” the yogi responded.

After a full dinner, cleaning up the kitchen and making their bed, the perplexed disciple asked: “Did you use any magic? How did you bring this about?”

The yogi smiled and replied, “I wanted to show you how the power of thoughts works. When you think with total concentration about something you want to happen, and your mind does not resist the subject of your thought, the thought materializes.”

“The secret is to concentrate, visualize, see details. All mental and emotiol energy must be projected into the scene unfolding before your inner eye. Above all, you must have faith in it.

“When you first meditate to empty your mind of all thoughts, and then allow only a single thought to enter, it gains a great power. One should be very careful with what he chooses to think about. A concentrated thought is powerful, and exerts a very strong influence.”

The disciple looked pensive: “I see that I have to sharpen my concentration manifold in order to be able to use this power.”

“Yes, it is the first step”, said his master, turning in for the night.
