BJP’s Smriti Irani took to Instagram to praise movie Thappad; says “Not ok to hit a Woman”

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani gave thumbs-up to the movie Thappad. The movie has been directed by Anubhav Sinha. The lead role will be played by Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu.

On Sunday, Irani took to Instagram, where she shared the trailer of the film and wrote alongside the video, "How many have heard "aurat ko hi adjust karna padta hai..." How many think "ki maar pitai sirf gareeb auraton ke hi pati karte hai..." How many believe "ki educated aadmi kabhi haath nahi uthata..." How many tell their girls their daughter-in-laws "koi baat nahi beta aisa to humare saath bhi hua lekin dekho aaj kitne khush hai..."

"I might not support the political ideology of the director or may disagree with some actors on some issues but this is a story that I will definitely watch and hope people watch it with their families. It's not ok to hit a woman... not even a slap... not even JUST one slap”, she added.

Thappad takes a very serious note on the issue of domestic violence, particularly focusing on how violent behavior can lead to divorce. Even if it is just one slap, it counts as domestic violence.

The film also features Pavail Gulati, Dia Mirza, Ratna Pathak Shah, Tanvi Azmi, Kumud Mishra, and Manav Kaul. It is slated for release on February 28.

In the recent Delhi election, Smrita Irani used the social media to send a reply to AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal. War of words ensued between Kejriwal and Smriti Irani after Kejriwal posted a tweet which Irani deemed anti-women.

Kejriwal had tweeted, “Please go out and vote today. I specially appeal to the women that just as you uphold responsibilities of your house, you also have to shoulder responsibilities of the country and Delhi. The women must go out and vote and please take the men in your house alongwith you to vote. Please do discuss with men whom it would be better to vote for.”

Irani retorted by tweeted, “Do you not consider women capable enough to decide for themselves who to vote for?”
