Gauhati University to host the second edition of “Jonaki” Film Festival

GUWAHATI: The second edition of “Jonaki” film festival organized by the Department of Communication and Journalism at Gauhati University from February 28 at Phanidhar Dutta Memorial Hall and AT Hall. The two-day festival will conclude on February 29.

This year a total of 12 films will be screened at the festival. The festival has received films from beyond the Northeast. The festival will also organise a short film competition, cine quiz competition, and a workshop on an animation film.

Speaking about the motive of the film festival, chief coordinator Rakesh Haloi said, “The main aim of this film festival is to promote ethnic language films from the Northeast among the students so that they become conscious of the future prospects of the Northeast film world.”

He also added, “The festival will provide a roadmap for aspiring filmmakers to make films in the region for its people. Apart from all these, it will help us to spread film awareness and knowledge in the society which helps in bringing the northeastern culture together.”

Department representative Arup Deka said, “Jonaki is a pragmatic approach to enrich the cinema culture amongst the people so that we develop a taste of art and culture in ur own unique way”.

Films like Bornodi Bhotiai, Mishing, Aamis, Kanneen, Calender, Yarwng, will be screened in the festival. The film Bulbul Can Sing and Mishing have won National Awards whereas Yarwng is the first movie in Tripura to win the National Award.

The first edition of the film festival “Jonaki” was organized in 2018 for the first time.
