New Delhi: Netflix's drama series 'Delhi Crime' bagged the International Emmy for Best Drama Series in 2020.

The story is based on the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case of Delhi that had sent shockwaves across the nation.

It is a fictionalised retelling of the story, the series follows Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vartika Chaturvedi, played by Shefali Shah, who puts together all the missing pieces of crime left behind by the culprits of the horrific gangrape and murder.

Richie Mehta, the director of the series said in his acceptance speech, "This project was led by women". He also paid tribute to the victim's family.

He dedicated the award to all the women who endure the violence that men inflict on them. "Finally, to the tireless mother and her daughter. Not a day goes by when I don't think about you both", said Mehta.

This happens to be the first big win for an India-based show at the International Emmys. In 2019, India had four big nominations, including Sacred Games season one, for the Best Drama series, but did not win any award.

Other nominations in 2020 was the nomination of actor Arjun Mathur for the Best Actor category for his performance in the Prime Video's original Made in Heaven. Four More Shots Please was also nominated for the Best Comedy series.
