The Korean wave is gaining international fame throughout recent years for its unique and entertaining content. If you are a newcomer to K-pop you may be curious to know why it is so special, when it has reached such popularity and what is its history.

What is K-pop?

K-pop is a short form of Korean popular music that includes every form of Korean music starting from Korea's vast industrial entertainment to indie music.

It is a music genre that originated in South Korea as a part of South Korean culture and includes styles like hip hop, rock, jazz, folk, reggae and others.

K-pop history:

The history of K-pop music can be traced back to the year 1885 when Henry Appenzeller an American missionary started teaching British and American folk named Changga. The first Kpop album came out in 1925which was titled I Pungjin Sewol by Lee Ryu-saek and Park Chae-seon.

K-pop emerged mainly after 1992 boy band Seo Taiji and Boys which was one of the earliest K-pop groups. In the 1990s began the modern K-pop idol culture but K-pop got international recognition from 2003 when TVXQ and BoA began a fresh generation of K-pop idols that made the made genre reach the Japanese market.

K-pop became mainly popular in the 2000s as in 2018 it has experienced major global growth which marked a 17.9 percent increase in revenue growth.

According to the Global Music Report 2019, K-pop ranked at no 6 among the top 10 music markets across the world in the year 2019. K-pop then break the all records in 2020 by experiencing 44.8 percent growth and became the fastest-growing market of the year.

The current spread of K-pop called the Korean wave is seen in different regions across the globe including Southeast Asia, East Asia, North Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, Latin America, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and the Western region.
