MUMBAI: Sony Pictures India revealed that the legendary superhero Shaktimaan, India's first superhero will be back on the big screen soon.
With an intriguing trailer released by Sony Pictures India, the first native superhero experienced by generations of the 1980s and especially the 1990s has once again become the talk of the town.
Sony Pictures India tweeted today, "After the super success of our many superhero films in India and all over the globe, it's time for our desi Superhero!" Tagged in the tweet are many others along with none other than Mukesh Khanna who had conceptualized and played the role of Shaktimaan in his superhit Doordarshan TV serial.
On YouTube, Sony has also released a teaser for the new trilogy. The teaser begins with images of a meteorite rotating erratically in space, perhaps on its way to collide with an artificial satellite orbiting the earth. It continues on to show an overhead picture of Mumbai's Colaba district, which includes the Gateway of India and the Taj Hotel. It also includes stills from Mumbai's Marine Drive and the BSE building. "As darkness and evil rule over humanity, it's time for him to return," the quotation continues. While it has been stated that Shaktimaan will be performed by a well-known actor, the firm has not released the actor's identity.
Shaktimaan was a TV serial that aired on Doordarshan from September 13, 1997, to March 27, 2005. Shaktimaan is a human who has gained superhuman abilities through meditation, Yoga, and the five elements of nature, namely Space, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.
With a new version of the old Indic superhero on the way, a whole generation of the 80s and 90s kids are eagerly anticipating his long-awaited return. Shaktimaan had disintegrated his body into five elements to save the city from a terminal calamity triggered by Tamraj Kilvish, as depicted in the TV series' last episode. It will be fascinating to see how the film celebrates his return, where it begins, and which people are featured.
