Vidya Balan looks promising as math genius in 'Shakuntala Devi' trailer

Guwahati: The much-awaited trailer of Vidya Balan's upcoming movie 'Shakuntala Devi', is a biopic of the mathematical genius Shakuntala Devi, who earned the nickname of 'human-computer' for her dazzling skill with numbers, has been released.

In the trailer, Vidya Balan's character is portrayed as a sharp, arrogant, eccentric, ruthless, witty, and outspoken Math wizard. In the nearly three-minute trailer, we see Vidya Balan aka Shakuntala Devi solving difficult problems with ease that baffles onlookers. From going to London to pursue her ambition to finally marrying the man of her dreams, everything seems perfect for Shakuntala Devi. With her wit coupled with charm, she wins the heart of people in London, who hail Shakuntala as a "super-genius."

From the trailer, one gets an inkling about Shakuntala Devi's tumultuous relationship with her daughter Anupama, played by actress Sanya Malhotra. It also appears that Anupama had a grudge against her mother for prioritizing maths ahead of her.

Shakuntala Devi, invariably described as "human-computer," is named in the 1982 edition of The Guinness Book of World Records for 13-digit multiplications in 28 seconds.

Shakuntala Devi was an Indian writer and mental calculator, popularly known as the "human computer" She also treated homosexuality in a positive vein and wrote a book titled The World of Homosexuals, which is the first-ever book about Homosexuality in India.

It is to be mentioned that the movie will be directed by Anu Menon, who says, "Shakuntala Devi's passion for maths and her determination to spread its joy to the world was unparalleled. She lived ahead of her times and on her own terms - and as we all strive to change the narrative of the female protagonist on-screen, her story is one that calls out to be told. And there's no one better than Vidya Balan to capture Shakuntala's wit and wisdom. I'm so excited that the film will have its world premiere on Amazon Prime Video and everyone will get to experience Shakuntala's incredible journey and Vidya's magical portrayal of her soon."

The movie will be premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 31 July. 'Shakuntala Devi' also features Amit Sadh and Jisshu Sengupta in pivotal parts.
