‘Wrong Movies Are Being Sent For Oscars’ : AR Rahman

MUMBAI: India hasn't been sending the correct kinds of movies to the Academy Awards, according to renowned Indian music composer AR Rahman, who won his Oscar in 2009 alongside lyricist Gulzar and sound designer Resul Pookutty for their work on Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire.

In a January interview, composer Rahman said, "Sometimes, I see that our movies run until the Oscar, but they don't get it. Wrong films are being sent to the Oscars. And all I can say is "don't." We must put ourselves in the shoes of others. To understand what is going on. must put myself in the position of a Westerner to understand what they are doing.”

The talk between Rahman and the well-known violinist is currently available on the Oscar winner's YouTube page.

Rahman received an invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which organizes the ceremony, after his Oscar victories in 2009.

The singer-composer is a regular voter who watches the films that gets nominated for the Oscars. With Danny Boyle's 127 Hours, Rahman received nominations in 2011 for both the best original song and the best original score.

The music for Gandhi Godse—Ek Yudh, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, was composed this year.

Two Indian films—one in Tamil and the other in Telugu—won in the categories in which they were nominated this year. Similar to Rahman and Gulzar winning for the song Jai Ho in 2009, MM Keeravaani and Chandrabose won Best Original Song for their work on the RRR song Naatu Naatu.

The Elephant Whisperers, a Netflix original movie, won Best Documentary Short. The award was presented to producer Guneet Monga and director Kartiki Gonsalves on stage.

In attendance at the Oscars on Sunday, Deepika Padukone introduced "Naatu Naatu," the film's best original song candidate (and eventual winner), during its performance. Fans are in awe at seeing her on the Oscars stage, as her speech is currently going viral on social media.

Many described it as a "proud moment," and others remarked on how polite she appeared.
