Shillong: After drawing a lot of flak from across sections of people over poor delivery of government services, the Meghalaya Cabinet, on Friday approved the Meghalaya Rights to Public Services Bill, 2020 to ensure timely delivery of government services and punishing erring officials.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the Bill will now be placed before the Meghalaya Assembly in the upcoming autumn session which is scheduled to begin on November 5.

"The purpose of the Bill is to ensure that a certain timeline is given for any kind of service that the government is providing to the people like caste certificate, driving license and others and the services are delivered within that timeline," the chief minister said.

Once this Bill becomes an Act and comes into force, officials failing to deliver services within the stipulated timeline shall be liable for prosecution, the CM added.

According to the chief minister, this would ensure that the overall delivery of services strengthens at the grass-root level.
