GUWAHATI: Twelve senior doctors in Assam will be the first to get the initial doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on January 16.

According to reports, the doctors considered for the first dose of vaccine at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) are– Dr UC Sarma, Dr Dhrubojyoti Bora, Dr Illias Ali, Dr Bibhash Chandra Goswami, Dr Subhash Khanna, Dr Harsha Bhattacharjee, Dr Rathindra Bhuyan, Dr Anup Barman, Dr Achyut Baishya, Dr Abhijit Sarma, Dr Brajen Lahkar and Dr Manoj Choudhury.

Earlier on January 15, the Assam State Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "the COVID-19 vaccine will take 45 days for the immunity to develop in the human body and start fighting against the virus.

However, the vaccine is not recommended for pregnant women including from those in the medical fraternity and children below 18 years are asked not to asked to take the dose.

It is to be mentioned that in this world's biggest vaccine drive, India will start the process by January 16.

The vaccination drive will be in a phased manner- In the first phase all the covid warriors which include doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, ambulance drivers, cleaning staff which were on the field physically dealing with the Covid patients which will be around 1.9 lakhs, health workers. (private and government)

In the second phase all the frontline staff which includes police, paramilitary which will be around 1 lakh people.

In the third phase, which can be called the must vaccination for all the persons above 50 years. Further along with that people below 50 years with the presence of comorbidity will also be provided with the vaccine.

The minister further stated that people with comorbidity in Assam consists of a population of around 30-33 per cent, i.e. 90 Lakhs to 1 crore.

Assam government has currently received 2,21,500 against the demand of 3,80,000 doses. Out of which 2,10,500 are Covishield and 20,000 are Covaxin.
