1,24,413 crimes Reported in 2018 in State

GUWAHATI: The year 2018 was marked by as many as 1,24,413 cognizable crimes in Assam against 1,11,118 in 2017 and 1,07,022 in 2016.

The break-up of different kinds of crimes in the State during 2018, according to statistics made available in the State Assembly, is – 1274 murders, 1909 rapes, 7651 kidnapping, 155 lootings, 1369 robberies, 1404 extortions, 4580 burglaries, 15669 thefts, 1098 riots, 2214 criminal breaches of trust, 5848 cheatings, 92 counterfeits, 74293 falling in other sections of IPC, 115756 cognizable crimes under IPC and 6957 crimes under other Acts.

On behalf of Home Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary informed the Assembly of this. Patowary said this while replying to a question from MLA Mamun Imdadul Haque Choudhury.

According to Patowary, while Guwahati city topped the list on murders with as many as 96 such incidents in 2018, Barpeta district topped the list in rapes with 234 cases during the year. While Guwahati topped the list in kidnapping with 677 cases during the year, Lakhimpur has the highest number of 15 looting incidents. While Guwahati also topped in robbery with 465 incidents during the year, Dhubri topped the list with 196 extortion cases. Guwahati city has also topped in burglary with 1034 cases and theft with 4234 case in 2018.
