14 Assamese who excelled in 2020

GUWAHATI: Amidst the all-pervading gloom caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, 14 Assamese excelled in various sectors during 2020.

Gouranga Lal Das was appointed as the Indian envoy to Taiwan. Of the 1999 batch of Indian Foreign Service, Das was the Joint Secretary of (America) in the Ministry of External Affairs. He hails from Barpeta district.

Ace pugilist Lovlina Borgohain earned a berth for the Tokyo Olympics by defeating Uzbekistan's Maftunakhon Melieva at the Asian/Oceanian Olympic Qualifiers.

Noted artiste Adil Hussain bagged the 'Best Actor' award at the Indo German Film Week in Berlin, for two of his recent performances in 'Pareeksha' (directed by Prakash Jha) and 'Nirvana Inn' (directed by Vijay Jayapal).

'Life in a Puppet' — an Assamese movie directed and produced by Rajen Das — bagged several awards at the Port Blair International Film Festival.

Another Assamese film 'Bridge' directed by Kripal Kalita was chosen for the main competition category in the 52nd Indian Panorama.

Saurav Chordia from Basugaon in Chirang district is the man behind the patch design for the 'Golden Arrow Squadron' of the Rafale fighter jets in 2020.

Rima Das returned as a jury member after her film 'Bulbul Can Sing' received the 'Special Mention' by the Generation 14plus International Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival-2019.

While Prabal Talukdar secured a position in the list of top scientists in the world, Bornali Gogoi becomes the first woman from Assam to hold the rank of Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force.
