GUWAHATI: As many as 218 people availed of accident benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) from 2019 to June, 2022.
The PMSBY is a one-year personal accident insurance scheme, renewable from year to year on a pan-India basis to bank/ post office account holders aged between 18 and 70 years and who give their consent to join and enable auto-debit. At the time of claim, the claimant has to submit a duly completed claim-cum-discharge form to the bank where the subscriber enrolled along with documents mentioned in the claim-cum-discharge form in support of death /permanent disability due to accident.
The scheme offers coverage for Rs 2 lakh in case of accidental death or total permanent disability and Rs 1 lakh for partial permanent disability due to an accident. It is available to people aged from 18 to 70 years having a bank account who give their consent to join and enable auto-debit at an annual premium of Rs 20 per subscriber.
According to sources in the State Finance Department, PMSBY is a central insurance scheme. "218 people have received the benefits payable under the scheme on death or disability due to accident in the past three-and-a-half years - 62 people got Rs 1.24 crore in 2019-20, as many as 23 people got Rs 46 lakh in 2020-21, as many as 112 got Rs 2.24 crore in 2021-22 and 21 people got Rs 42 lakh in 2022-23 up to June," an official said.
Twelve of the 62 people who got the benefits under the schemes in 2019-20 were from the Kamrup district. Likewise, 76 of the 112 people who got the benefits under the scheme 2021-22 were from the Kamrup (M) district.
