22,039 crime cases against women; 5,350 cases against children in Assam

GUWAHATI: During the last nine months from January 1 to September 30, 2021, altogether 22,039 crime cases against women have been registered; besides 5,350 crime cases against children across the State. Moreover, 770 murder cases also have been registered.

During 2020, Assam figured at the top of the list of crimes against women across the country. During that year, a total of 21,914 crime cases against women were registered in Assam. This data of the Assam Police indicate that of late, there has been a rise in such cases in the State.

The crime rate against women in Assam during 2020 was 154.30 per lakh against the national average of 56.5 per lakh. Similarly, there has been a rise in the graph of murder cases since 2016, when 1,149 such cases were registered. Altogether 1,145 murder cases were registered in 2017; 1,274 in 2018; 1,242 in 2019; while 1,237 murder cases were registered in the State during the COVID-induced lockdown period.
