GUWAHATI: A total of 28 custodial deaths in police custody were reported in Assam in the previous five financial years. This data came to light as per the number of registered cases given by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). In 2018-2019, five cases were reported: two in 2019-2020, one in 2020-2021, nine in 2021-2022, and 11 in 2022-2023, bringing the total number to 28.

As per the number of registered cases of the NHRC, a statement showing the year-wise and State-wise number of cases registered about custodial deaths in police custody was released. According to this list, a total of 687 custodial deaths were recorded across the country between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2023.

Meanwhile, eight incidents took place in Manipur, seven in Meghalaya, six in Arunachal Pradesh, three each in Tripura and Mizoram, two in Nagaland, and one in Sikkim during the same five-year duration. If we consider the whole nation, 136 such incidents took place in 2018-2019, 112 in 2019-2020, 100 in 2020-2021, 175 in 2021-2022, and 164 in 2022-2023, bringing the total number to 687 in the five years under consideration.
