GUWAHATI: Following the directive of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), around 4,188 jail inmates across the State have been vaccinated for COVID-19 infection. Notably, as of June 4 (first half), as many as 9702 jail inmates are lodged in different jails across Assam out of which 4,188 inmates have been vaccinated.

Earlier in May, an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs stated, "All eligible prison inmates may be provided vaccination on a priority basis in consultation with State Health Authority by setting up special vaccination camps in prison complexes. Prison staff may be encouraged to receive vaccines on a priority basis."

According to a source, 1121 inmates from Guwahati Central Jail have been vaccinated. The breakdown of vaccination of inmates in some of the jails is — Tezpur Central Jail (363), Dibrugarh Central Jail (166), Nagaon Central Jail (435), Goalpara District Jail (196), Karimganj District Jail (193), North Lakhimpur District Jail (217), Sivasagar District Jail (97), Golaghat District Jail (30), Majuli District Jail (51), Abhayapuri District Jail (161), Diphu District Jail (259), Udalguri District Jail (137), and Special Jail Nagaon (226).

It is to be mentioned here that there are 31 jails in Assam out of which six are central jails, 22 are district jails, one open-air jail, one sub-jail and one special jail.
