GUWAHATI: As per the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directive a letter has been sent to the State IG, Prisons to carry out vaccination drives in all the jails in the State.

With this the state prisons in Assam has also started with the massive vaccination drive across all the jails in Assam.

As per source, currently COVID-19 positive cases among jail inmates across Assam stands at 152, in which the number of active cases at the Karimganj District Jail stands at 72, Kokrajhar District Jail with 43, barpeta District Jail 1, Abhayapuri District Jail with 36 with active cases.

As per the order from the Ministry of Home Affairs it stated that, "All eligible prison inmates may be provided vaccination on a priority basis in consultation with State Health Authority by setting up special vaccination camps in prison complexes. Prison staffers may be encouraged to receive vaccines on a priority basis".

Further till now 476 inmates in Assam has been vaccinated till date.

It is to be mentioned here that there are total 31 jails in Assam., 6 Central Jail, 22 District jail, 1 open air jail, 1 sub jail and 1 special jail and on date overall 9000 inmates are present and in which 476 inmates have been vaccinated.

As per sources, 12 inmates in Silchar Central Jail has been vaccinated, meanwhile, Dibrugarh Central Jail has vaccinated 73 inmates.

On the other hand, Barpeta Central Jail has vaccinated 60 inmates, Kokrajhar District Jail has vaccinated 29 inmates, Dhubri District Jail- 38, Majuli District Jail- 33, Abhayapuri District Jail- 19, Diphu District Jail- 50, Mangaldoi District Jail- 12, Karimganj District Jail- 27, Biswanath Chariali District Jail- 28, Hamren District Jail- 56, Morigaon District Jail- 39 have been vaccinated so far.

Notably as on date there have been no COVID-19 positive cases in Guwahati Central Jail. Further, earlier 10 inmates were found to be positive, however, now they have been cured.
