Guwahati: As many as 53 COVID-19 positive cases have been detected in Pandu locality in Guwahati's Maligaon area, reports said.

The health workers went to receive the patients and take them to the hospital ran into unexpected hurdles, as the patients failed to cooperate and demanded a report as proof that they did indeed test COVID-19 positive.

This alarming development has been reported at a time when the COVID-19 positive cases in the city have continued to soar upwards at an unprecedented rate, prompting the Government to call for a total shutdown.

Yesterday, 172 out of 302 COVID-19 positive cases in the city were reported in Guwahati alone, confirmed the state's health and finance minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. At the same time, the spread of the virus at the community level has also been reported of late, triggering widespread panic in all 4 corners of the city.

While the COVID story in other parts of Assam seems to be one of recoveries, Guwahati is reporting one case after the other. The deaths have also begun. On Sunday, as the citizens began preparations to go into lockdown mode, yet another person -- aged 45 -- died due to complications from the virus.

Sarma has hinted that the commercial hub of Fancy Bazar and its surrounding areas are the hotspots of the virus in the city -- and Pandu falls right within the centre of the area that has been tagged as a corona hotspot. The emergence of these cases and the ones yesterday seem to convey that the rampant march of the virus through the streets of Guwahati is far from over.

In India, a huge spike of 18,522 new coronavirus patients was recorded in the last 24 hours, taking India's tally to 5,66,840 cases. A total of 16,893 patients have died since the beginning of the pandemic, the Union Health Ministry said.
