5,475 persons stranded in other States assisted: Assam Government

GUWAHATI: Altogether 5,475 persons from Assam presently lodged in various States across the country have been provided assistance of various kinds from the government side in view of the public health emergency and the 21-day nationwide lockdown to contain COVID-19.

As per directions of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the State General Administration Department (GAD) has launched a slew of initiatives to assist people from Assam who are working or in transit or staying in metro cities for medical treatment, studies, on a pilgrimage, as tourists and for work are stuck at their respective locations.

According to the State GAD data (as on March 31, 2020), 1,670 persons were assisted in Maharashtra followed by Tamil Nadu/ Vellore (1,276), Karnataka (850), West Bengal (550), Kerala (363), Andhra Pradesh (200), Meghalaya (146), Delhi (134), Rajasthan (86), Bihar (50) and other States (150).

The GAD has been rendering constant assistance to the citizens of Assam stranded in various States across the country, in coordination with the Assam Houses or Bhawans and respective State and district administrations. Further, a team has been formed at GAD to liaise with the Assam Houses or Bhawans and the district administrations of the respective States and thereby provide the necessary support to those citizens who need assistance with regard to food, accommodation, medical support, transportation and other assistance.

Talking to The Sentinel, Commissioner and Secretary, GAD, M Angamuthu said, “We are in touch with the administrations of all States to ensure that the citizens of Assam in the other States do not face any hurdles with respect to their security, food, accommodation, and medical support among others during this lockdown period. I would appeal to all such people to stay safe in their present locations. They can contact the GAD in case of any emergency.”
