
GUWAHATI: The eighth Sarat Mahanta Memorial Lecture, in commemoration of the birth anniversary of the late educationist, social worker, and human rights advocate, Professor Sarat Mahanta, will be held on May 1.
He was born on May 1, 1937, to a reputable family from the historic Sri Sri Chaliha Bare Satra in Nazira, Sivasagar district. Professor Mahanta passed away on June 18, 2013. He was the Satradhikar of Chaliha Bare Satra and Chief Advisor of the Sivasagar Press Club until his demise. Having worked as a journalist for over two decades, he has authored several books and many thoughtful articles.
Professor Mahanta served as the Head of the Department, Department of History, Sivasagar College, for more than 33 years before retiring. Additionally, he was a member of the Assam Human Rights Commission for almost four years.
The eighth Sarat Mahanta Memorial Lecture will feature Dr. Shamika Ravi, a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Economic Advisory Council, as the guest speaker. The event will take place at the auditorium of the Royal Global University, Guwahati, on May 1 at 4 p.m, stated a press release. The lecture will be inaugurated by the Governor of Assam, Gulab Chand Kataria, and the keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Shamika Ravi, a distinguished economist, on the topic of "A Secular Democracy in Practise."
