Born at Ghagrapara in Salchapra in the Cachar district in the mid-1930s, multi-faceted talent Shukhendra Kumar Sinha had to go a long way to leave indelible imprints on every field he had tried his hand with. He joined the Assam Secretariat and retired from service as a personal secretary, and it is something like a routine. All the indelible imprints he left behind are in literary, cultural, religious, and social arenas.

Writing dramas and directing them are his hobbies. In fact, he is among the ones who started the movement of social dramas in the Bishnupriya Manipuri community in the 1960s, when historic dramas were prevalent in the community. He has several staged social dramas to his credit. This writer had one occasion to act in one of his plays here in Guwahati. His thirst for performing art did not end in dramas. He also tried his hand with a television serial in Guwahati Doordarshan Kendra. His serial ‘Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara’ did have a high TRP.

In social service, his contribution to the Bishnupriya Manipuri community will remain honoured for all time. As an office-bearer of Bishnupriya Manipuri Samaj Sanstha (BMSS), he was deeply associated with the case for the OBC status of his community with its right nomenclature intact. He was a laborious social worker, rendering services to his community in association with the likes of former BMSS president the late Surendra Rajkumar, general secretary Shanti Kumar Sinha, and other members like Manindra Sinha (IFS), the late Gauri Prasad Sinha, Sri Birendra Sinha, and others.

He had been a member of the Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Sabha (BMSS). He contributed articles to Kaliprasad Darshan, a bilingual journal.

A pious Shukhendra Kumar Sinha also left an indelible mark in the religious field. He was deeply associated with the committee of Radhakunda in the Mathura Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Till his demise on September 18, 2023, he was the president of the Guwahati branch committee of Randhakunda, besides holding the post of president of the joint committee of all the Bishnupriya Manipuri mandirs in Guwahati. He also held the post of president of Govinda Mandir at Milan Nagar in the Borbari area of Guwahati for two consecutive terms. The developmental works of the temple that took place during his tenure as president speak volumes of his dedication.

His demise on September 23, 2023, at the age of 77 has left a void in the Bishnupriya Manipuri community, especially in me, as I used to take suggestions from him on all important issues concerning the Vaishnavite community. On his Adhya-shraddha today, I pray for the eternal peace of his soul.
