AASU, 28 other bodies to fast on May 29

GUWAHATI, May 26: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 28 other ethnic organizations of the State are not going to allow their protest against the anti-Assam Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to flicker out. On May 29 all these organizations are going to stage a daylong mass hunger strike from 6 am at Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) field at Chandamari in the city against the Bill.

Apart from the demand for revocation of the controversial Bill, other demands of the organizations are – implementation of the Assam Accord in a specific timeframe, providing constitutional safeguards to the indigenous people of Assam as spelt out in the Assam Accord, sealing of the India-Bangladesh border on a war footing and signing a bilateral agreement between India and Bangladesh for the deportation of Bangladeshis from Assam.

In a statement issued to the press on May 26, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Baishya have appealed to all people of the State to take part in the hunger strike slated for May 29.
