GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) has sharply criticized the state government's decision to withdraw the Assamese language paper from the APSC (Assam Public Service Commission) examination.

Terming the state government's move as "unacceptable for everyone", the students' body demanded that the government must withdraw this decision. The AASU also said that "it was unfortunate that the state government was trying to undermine the Assamese language at a time when the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) has given due recognition to the Assamese language. It further said that "the decision was an insult to the Assamese language". The government's decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting on Thursday.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and its general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said that "the decision of the Assam government was beyond their comprehension as it comes at a time when other states are trying to preserve and popularize their regional languages." Both the leaders demanded the immediate rollback of the government's decision.
