GUWAHATI: All Assam Students' Union (AASU) president Dipanka Kumar Nath has hailed the arrest of Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed for his "provocative" comments against the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.
Talking to The Sentinel, Nath said, "This is not the first time that Sherman Ali Ahmed has made controversial statements. In the past too he had publicly made statements which reflected an attitude of appeasement towards illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. His recent comments on the martyrs of the Assam Agitation are unpardonable."
"It is due to the sacrifice of more than 855 martyrs of the six-year long Assam Agitation that the historic Assam Accord was signed in 1985. No one has the right to criticize the martyrs," he said and warned that in future no one should make any derogatory comments against the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.
The AASU president welcomed the move of the State Government to arrest MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed and urged the government to ensure that the MLA did not get bail easily.
