GUWAHATI: Two labourers were killed on the spot and seven others injured when earth fell on them while working at a RUB (Road Under Bridge) between Panbari-Thakurkuchi stations in the Guwahati–Lumding Section of NF Railway around 1.30 pm on Saturday.

The construction of the Road Under Bridge was going on for the seamless and safe movement of local people including villagers of the area by replacing an existing level-crossing gate (ST-20).

The incident occurred when concrete slabs were being placed after earth cutting by the engaged staff of the contractor. At the time of placement of concrete slabs, the earth fell down on labourers who were working in the area. Altogether nine people got trapped in the incident. Seven persons could be rescued with the help of the local authorities. However, two labourers – Insan Ali (31) from Mayang and Saiful Ali from Sipajhar – lost their lives in the incident. The seven others who have been shifted to the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital) have been identified as Anarul Islam (22), Muslim Sheikh (25), Nurul Ali (35), Rajen Tumung (45), Ajahar Ali (30), Tilak Chandra Das (45) and Marjum Ali (25).

In a press release issued to the media, NF Railway said, "The Railway authority is extending all necessary help to the injured labourers. Senior railway officials, including Additional Divisional Railway Manager and Chief Bridge Engineer from Guwahati are already at the site."

Road Under Bridge or Road Over Bridge is being constructed all over Indian Railways for ensuring the safety of road users and also for ensuring the safety of train passengers. NF Railway will also hold an inquiry to find out the reason leading to the unfortunate incident.
