Action plan to tackle rising road accidents in Kamrup Metro

In the wake of rising road accidents, the Kamrup Metro district administration has formulated an action plan to reduce road mishaps in the district.

GUWAHATI: In the wake of rising road accidents, the Kamrup Metro district administration has formulated an action plan to reduce road mishaps in the district. On Wednesday, deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha chaired a road safety meeting at the DC office where several decisions were taken.

Assistant Commissioner of Transport Gautam Das, national highways authority, police, PWD, forest and excise department officials were present in the meeting.

The deputy commissioner directed the national highways authority to identify all accident prone sites such as in front of the North East Cancer Institute at Jorabat, in front of the Sarusjai Stadium, Khanapara flyover and Beltola connecting road and install traffic barricade and speed breaker within 2-3 days. He directed officials to visit the accident sites, inquire into the cause of the accident and accordingly prepare the report within two-three days and take action.

The District Transport authority has been directed to take strict action against helmetless drivers and pillions of two-wheelers and impose fines on them.

He also directed the traffic police and district transport department to take appropriate action against the speeding and overloaded dumpers. The district transport department has been directed to take strong action against drivers if they stop the bus at any place other than the designated stoppage at Ganeshguri, Basistha Chariali etc in view of the heavy traffic jam.

For public information, the district transport department has to inform the district administration about the bus fare and provide a phone number for registering complains. The deputy commissioner asked the Joint Director of Health to take steps for setting up of Trauma Centres in Government Hospitals. The National Highways Authority has been directed to provide public awareness about the Trauma Centre at each Toll Gate, as well as to provide free Toll Number and Health Services 24 hours a day.
