GUWAHATI: In a significant development, the State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB), Assam has decided to increase the number of candidates who will be allowed to sit for the written examination against each post of constable in various wings under the Assam Police.

According to a tweet posted by Assam's Director General of Police, the decision to include an additional list of candidates for the examination was taken because: "It was observed that many candidates had cleared the cut-off in more than one category of posts. The actual number of people called for the written exam in the results declared on 19th January, 2022 thereby, has fallen much below the ratio of 1:5 as announced in the original advertisements dated 25th April 2018, addendum dated 19th December 2019 , advertisement dated 18th February2020, advertisement dated 8th June 2020, advertisement dated 13th December 2017."

As such, the SLPRB tweet stated, additional candidates will be called for the written examination for all category of posts where eligible candidates are available.

The new merit list will be announced soon, the SLPRB said.

The examination pertains to recruitment of 2,391 posts of constables under the Unarmed Branch (UB) of the Assam Police and 4,271 constables under the Armed Branch (AB); 813 constables under the Assam Police Radio Organization (APRO) and 788 constables under the Fire & Emergency Service (F&ES); 754 posts of constables under the Director General of Civil Defence (DGCD) and Commandant General of Home Guards (CGHG); and 154 constables in the Assam Industrial Security Force (from SPOs only) under DGCD and CGHG.

It may be mentioned that a section of aggrieved candidates had staged a protest in front of the office of Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) here on Friday, demanding that the number of selected examinees be increased as per previous stipulation. The protestors maintained that while the relevant advertisements had mentioned that five prospective candidates would be invited to sit for the written examination against each post, only candidates are being called for the written examination against each post. This had resulted in inflation of the cut-off marks and consequent deprivation of many candidates.
